Wow! This tool has endless possiblities in the classroom. I left some voicethreads on some third graders poetry readings, noting their great use of inflection and/or quality illustrations. Luckily I believe I won a microphone a while back to be able to do this.
Some of my favorite ideas I stumbled on included pictures of a class field trip and the kids commenting on their adventure, a math brain challenge where the kids explained their thinking, poetry reading with illustrations, and a voicethread about friendship where the kids uploaded pictures from Flickr to represent their idea of friendship and then explain why they chose it. Oh, and onewhere people said Happy Birthday to someone and another one where the students found examples of a triangle in real life and shared which kind of triangle it is! Talk about meaningful, authentic learning!
In addition to possibly using some of the ideas I noted above, I would like to see the fourth grade students perhaps use it when communicating with their fourth grade penpals in Chicago! I also think this would be a cool tool to represent the school's history with pictures of our rich history while some students, alum, and faculty sharing about the photo. For the third grade invention project they could upload their sketches of their idea and then get feedback from their classmates on how well it will function or suggest ideas to improve it.
I had to reflect about tool for a while to really understand why it would be more effective than PowerPoint with sound or Podcasts. Eventually I discovered it's a more public file. Many people can comment without "access" therefore becoming more interactive. I also liked the aspect of being able to identify in the picture what you are referring to using the doodling function.

You have outlined some excellent possible uses for VoiceThread! I too love the inking aspect of VoiceThread. This is another example of how and why Tablets would be a great bonus to the LS.
